Caradon 3 PGSOB B 2
Coming off a hugely impressive win last week, Caradon put out a stronger team and had plenty of confidence going into a game against PGSOB B, who sat at the top of the table. Caradon started a little slowly again and PGSOBs opened the scoring with a flowing move that ended with a neat shot from a tight angle. Caradon, to their credit, bounced back wth some good work from Ru Martin getting the ball into the 'D' and winning a short corner. Thr tried and tested routine worked well again with the pushout from Martin Batty to Leon Farrow and a crisp shot into the bttom corner levelled the scores. Caradon soon went 2-1 up with some sustained pressure earning a free hit inside the 25. The ball was hit by Batty, was deflected into the 'D' and Farrow collected and put it away. Caradon soaked up a great deal of pressure from PGSOBs to hold the lead going into half time. PGSOBs continued to press in the second half, but held out by some good defending by Tim Wright and Steve Walsh. A slightly contentious decision went Caradon's way allowing them to push up the right wing with Luke Jeffries who passed the ball into Richard Tamblin in the 'D'. He held the ball up well, slipped the ball inside to Farrow, who smashed it home to complete his hat-trick. PGSOBs were continuing to move the ball well and ultimately got a second ball with a neat run around the back and slip into the middle for a deflection to put it past the Caradon 'keeper. PGSOBs continued to push for the equaliser but Caradon held out for another very impressive win against a top team in this division.
Caradon II V Falmouth III 10-0 (yes Ten!!!)
Price’s goal-fest
A game of two halves saw Caradon 2nds hosting a young and inexperienced Falmouth team. The pressure on the home side to reflect their higher league position told in the first 15 minutes. Forays were too easy and the home side’s frustration grew as they made heavy weather of what should have been comfortable superior game-play. Added to this, the 14-year-old Falmouth goalie was having the game of her life to keep her side in the match.
But at long last the defence was breached by a lack of communication allowing a rolling ball from Hislop to slide into put the home side into the lead. Hislop was not finished and within minutes was on the scoresheet again comfortably slipping the ball under the diving goalie.
Somewhat settled, Caradon started moving the ball around more comfortably. A driving run into the D and strike by Mortimore gave Giddy a simple tap deflection to go 3-0 up. The fourth goal came from Price dodging and weaving her way into the D, finishing with a rocket launch smash into the left of the goal. This seemed to spark the forwards into turbo-speed with fantastic off-the-ball movement dragging their markers away, Giddy found herself in acres of space and made a dazzling solo run and strike to send her team in 5-0 up at half time.
The second half was equally as exciting and completely different to the first half. Caradon now in cruise-control worked the ball beautifully around to produce 5 superb team goals, with Price getting on the end of each attack to finish off in style. Hedley and Mortimore gave several textbook demonstrations of 1-2 passing to set up the first couple of goals. But it was Brown who carved her way through the Famouth defence numerous time providing visionary passes that enable the team to camp right up in the visitor’s defensive quarter. Un-knowingly ready for the Price goal-fest. Another goal, slip from Paramore, touch in by Mortimore and Price had collared her 4th of the game. The final two goals came within minutes with Brown setting Price up twice for sweet shots in past the goalie.
Credit to the defence of Lilley, Wood and Prentice who snuffed out any of Falmouth’s forays, and Eddy in goal who didn’t touch the ball once. A superb performance ladies. Caradon make a cross-border raid to take on Mannamead 2 next week, which is expected to be a nip-tuck game.
Penzance II 0 v 0 Caradon III
Caradon III's travelled down to Penzance for this weeks fixture. It was a beautiful sunny day and the team met up nice and early with plans to stop for a bite of brunch on the way ( team building honest!!). The team stopped off at M & S at Hayle, causing quite a stir and filled their bellies with delicious but healthy food (cough cough). Once sufficently full and with lots of wishes of good luck from the staff and customers off they went again for the short drive to Penzance pitch.
Caradon wanted to make this match hard work for the strong and experienced Penzance side so had to start strong and work hard for each other. This was exactly how the team performed picking off the attacking chances with confidence. Josie Dudley in goal was as cool as a cucumber all the way through this match dealing with any balls the defence couldn't get their sticks onto. Half time ended in a very respectable 0 - 0.
Skipper Lockett told the team they would have to keep up this fantastic display of team work as she knew the home side would come back on the pitch pushing hard for a goal. Caradon kept their heads and again displayed calm and confidence, intercepting the balls and pushing them back up the pitch. Caradon's hard work and determination came close to being rewarded on numerous occasions. In the dying minutes of the game Penzance pushed all but 1 of their players up the pitch to push for a winning goal, however Caradon stood strong and kept the score sheet clean and came away with a well deserved point. A Fantastic team performance!! :-)
ECVH 5 v 0 Caradon Ladies I
On a beautiful sunny morning Caradon travelled to Cullompton to face inform Exeter Hornets with a score line that really did not reflect the game.
As the whistle blew Caradon headed for the opponents goal causing the away keeper to make a superb save within the first 2 minutes then with 2 fast breaks and against the run of play ECVH had scored 2 goals before 10 minutes had been played. Caradon settled and gained back possession and played some good hockey keeping ECVH in their own half for long periods. Claire Worden worked hard in the middle switching the direction of the ball, but when the home team broke their front line was strong and skilful, with some great defending from Hannah Quantinance and Marcia Burgess and excellent timely tackles from player of the match Sharon Jeffery kept them from getting near the goal.
In the second half ECVH were quick off the mark and scored from a well worked short corner, Caradon continued to attack but no avail their defence held strong and soaked up everything Caradon had to give, with shots going wide and saves off the line it was one of those days where nothing was going in!
The last 10 minutes Caradon tired and with no subs, ECVH’s 13 team squad had the legs and scored another 2 before the final whistle blew.
12 & 13-Mar-11 Sidmouth 1 v 1 Caradon Ladies I
With several key players missing, Caradon 1sts knew it was going to be a tough trip to Sidmouth on Saturday. The change of personnel in pivotal positions meant that Caradon took a while to settle and really start playing. During this period, Sidmouth took advantage and took the lead 1-0. Apart from the staunch defence of Helen Delbridge, Sharon Jeffery, Rachel Spencer, Nicky Wood and Becky Mortimer it could have been a lot more. After a re-shuffle halfway through the first half, Caradon started looking more like the team that has been performing well since Christmas and they went into half time, optimistic that a result was still possible. The second half started well, with sustained pressure from Caradon and great work from Helen Manley and Jackie Walters on the right setting up several chances that unfortunately just couldn’t be put away. Tireless closing down from Olivia Childs and Glayne Price up front kept the pressure on and Caradon were eventually rewarded with a short corner, the ball was excellently stuck by Clare Poad and was saved off the line by a Si, resulting in a penalty flick. Poady stepped up and slotted the ball home making the final result 1-1. This was a very tough game that was quite feisty at times and Caradon should be proud to have come away with a well deserved point, which now sees them, safe in the league. Dart A 1 v 3 Caradon Men
Caradon went to Totnes to play Dart A in a must win game for both teams. Both teams are near the bottom of the table and a win would virtually guarantee safety for next season. Unfortunately Caradon started off with only 10 men due to various wrok commitments and injuries, and were playing on a very heavy, slow and sandy pitch that Dart were much more used to. The game started and Caradon were immediately on the back foot due a mistake at the back and Dart had their first short corner, which they converted at the second attempt after a fine save by Toby Riddle. Dart continued to press, but Caradon defending held strong as they got used to pitch. They were pressing well and Ru Martin was unlucky not to level things up with a shot that went wide at the back post. Things were levelled up with Caradon's 2nd short corner with a shot by Leon Farrow into the bottom corner. Caradon were getting bolder and took the lead with a good run down the sideline by Richard Tamblin and into the 'D' before slipping it back to Luke Jeffries, who slid it neatly under the goalkeeper. The second half proved tighter as Caradon sat back a little more and Dart pushed harder. Some good short corner defender by Steve Walsh kept Caradon's noses in front before they went further ahead after some good team play. Caradon controlled the ball well in the middle of the pitch, before moving it wide. Jeffries took it down the wing before crossing it in and Martin finished at the back post. Given the state of the pitch and not being at full capacity, Caradon held on to record a gutsy win that they should be very proud of.Caradon Mixed 1 v 7 Newent
Back Becky Mortimore, Ru Martin, Nicky Wood, Martin Batty, Clare Poad, Marcia Burges Front Rapper, Josh Terry, Sharon Jeffrey, Olivia Childs, Toby Riddle
Having lost in the Mixed England Hockey League first round last month, Caradon entered the vase with a tough match against Newent, who had made the long trip down from Gloucestershire. With Newent's mens and ladies' teams both being two leagues above Caradon, Caradon were going to be in for a difficult game. And so it prooved from the outset. Newent were crisp on the ball and moved it well creating an early chance that they coolly put away. Caradon regrouped and began to apply some pressure of their own and Claire Poad was unfortunate not to score with a good turn and shot that just went wide. Newent continued to pressure and were only denied by some good defending by Sharon Jeffrey and Martin Batty. However, their continued dominance eventually paid off with a strong back stick shot that evaded Toby Riddle in goal. Caradon held strong to go into half time 2-0 down. Things got worse in the second half. Newent's better fitness and movement started to pay dividends with thier slick passing and speed allowing them to score three further unanswered goals. Caradon finally got on the scoresheet through Ru Martin, who had a good game against a good defensive line. The ball was neatly played through for him to pick it up at the top of the 'D' and then slip it under the onrushing goalkeeper. Newent scored twice more to give a final score of 7-1, but Caradon can be proud of the way they played against a better team. (Martin Batty)Caradon Mixed 1 v 7 Newent Mixed
Sprits high despite loss.
Sunday saw the Caradon mixed team play Newent in the plate round of the England Hockey League tournament after losing out in the cup competition to local rivals Penzance. Despite the wonderful weather Caradon knew that this would be a tough game, as the opposition play a few leagues higher than our local side. The visitors started the game strongly and scored the opening goal in the first few minutes of the game, waking up the home defence. Caradon regrouped and started, what would be at times, a pitched battle to clear the ball out of their own half. Martin Batty and Sharon Jeffries worked hard stopping the Newent forwards from advancing on the goal en-mass, cutting out key passes with some well timed runs. The home side seemed to have the measure of the attack and were holding quite well but with most of the team pulling back to defend they were still having problems pushing forward. However the chances provided by the two youngest players in the Caradon Squad Ru Martin and Olivia Childs gave the defence some respite. Olivia made some skilful tackles and displayed strength well above her size challenging the Newent midfield players, and some driving runs from Ru broke through to trouble the Newent back line. The visitors were always looking to attack and some great passing play between their three key players opened up and confused the Caradon defence, enabling them to extend their lead before half time.
The half time talk was up beat and focused on the positive passing play and the need to keep pressing forward, so with the sun on their backs
the home side stepped out on the pitch with heads up. Newent came out fast and were met head on by a very determined home side. Strong interceptions and passing playing between Becky Mortimer and Leon Farrow gave Caradon more chances to push forward into the opposition half. This gave Clare Poad the chance to fire off some great shots at goal, unfortunately the angle was just too tight and it seemed the elusive
goal just wouldn't come. Newent however had little problem scoring at the other end of the pitch against a slowly flagging defence. The determination of the home side shone through like the afternoon sun, as never once did they give up and let their heads drop. So determined were they, that it was only a matter of time before they got what they deserved. It started in defence, a quick movement, a nice pass linked to lovely run and Caradon were pressing into the opposition D spurred on by the home crowd. The initial shot was deflected by the Newent defence but the follow up shot by Ru Martin squeezed under the visiting keep and rolled into the goal! The cries from the crowd could be heard in Callington! Though this goal made no impact in the final out come of the match 7-1 it is testament to the team work and determination of the Caradon side. (Toby Riddle) 26-Feb-11
Caradon Ladies I 2 v 5 Teign
It was a sunny afternoon and Caradon Ladies where prepared for a battle against a side that are second in the table. From the off Caradon's structure was evident and took control for the first 10 minutes. Teign battled hard but Caradon's defence Sharon Jeffrey, Rachael Spencer, Hannah Quaintance and Claire Brown held them at bay. Caradon created good chances which lead to short corners and free hits. with a lucky break from Teign they broke the Caradon defence to go 1-0 up. Teign then stepped up to score another goal but this did not deter Caradon's spirits. With good passing across the midfield from Marcia Burgess, Claire Poad, Becky Strang and Reenie Batten which resulted in a short corner being giving and Claire Poad putting it in the back of the net. This raised Caradon's spirits and with some good runs from Fleur Worden and Olivia Childs who later recieved man of the match gave Claire Poad a second chance to bring the teams level. Caradon remained determined but Teign had the edge as they had fresh legs to bring on. With good runs and passing Teign broke through Caradon's defence to end the match winning 5-2. It was a well played game by the home team who are ready for next weeks game against Dartmouth.
12 Feb-11
Caradon Men 4 v 1 Tavistock
Coming off a heavy loss at Bude last week, Caradon were keen to improve and get back to winning ways. They started strongly again and were 1-0 up very quickly after a strong run from Leon Farrow and a clean shot past the keeper. A mistake from the back at Caradon allowed to Tavistock to equalise quickly, but that only fortified Caradon. Caradon continued to press and had several efforts but were unable to convert until just before the break. Eliott Watts neatly controlled a pass at the back post and slipped it under the keeper to give Caradon a deserved lead.
The second half was a little more even with Tavistock earning some short corners and some more controlled possession. However, Caradon were more organised at the back and kept out everything they offered. Caradon increased their lead with 2 short corners in quick succession. The first was neatly put away by Dave Towers, before Farrow scored his second a few minutes later with a crisp shot to make the score 4-1, which ultimately became the final score. It was a good performance for Caradon who were unlucky not score more and will bring confidence for future games.

Penzance 2 v 2 Caradon ladies 1
Caradon 1s travelled to Penzance for this league fixture, arriving to some confusion on the start time and finding themselves with little or no warmup.Nevertheless this did nothing to distract them from taking control of the game and dominating play from the whistle. With only a few minutes gone, a short corner was awarded, giving Clare "the aeroplane" Poad the opportunity to put Caradon in front with a cracking top of D strike.Caradon continued the attacking play with Fleur Worden and Reenie Batten constantly putting the Penzance defence under pressure.Eventually resulting in a great team goal which was threaded through for Marcia Burgess to nudge into goal.
Penzance then started to step up a gear giving Rachel Spencer and Claire Worden plenty to do through the centre.Penzance being lucky to have their goal allowed after it hit one of their players feet before being hit into the goal.
During the second half Caradon gained lots of possession, but were unable to convert it into goals.Sharon Jeffery made some great interceptions on the right,Amy Collins and Becky Strang worked tirelessly on the left, but to no avail.Penzance then managed to pull the score back level at two each.Overall a good game for Caradon with lots of attacking play and possession, but were just unable to convert their chances and a penalty flick.
Caradon III 2 v 1 Plym Marjons III
Caradon III entertained Plym Marjons for this weeks fixture and were full of confidence after a very narrow defeat against top of the table St. Austell the week before when St.Austell only managed to put 1 goal past what should have been an easy win.
Caradon were easily beaten 4 -0 in the last game they played against the plymouth side and knew they would have to come out fighting from the start to put pressure on the travellling side. Plym however had the same idea and were quickly attacking the home side's goal. Defenders Michelle Boots, Jane Luiten( player of the match), Jeanette Turpin and Josie Dudley again played they hearts out and kept the attacks at bay.
At half time the score was 0-0 and Caradon knew they had a chance if they kept up the hard work. Plym however were beginning to get frustrated and had already had a player sent off for dangerous play. Second half and Caradon III held strong, Midfeilders Jules Walsh, Shelley Lockett, Molly Walsh and Karen Witts were run off they're feet trying to stop the travellers attacks. Midway through the 2nd half Walsh's ball found Olivia childs who took on 3 of the plyms defenders to set up Lauren Horner with her first of the match. Plym pushed higher and left the attackers of Abi Larigo, Maria Jorden, Horner and Childs with the space they needed and a long ball from defence again found Childs who set up Horner again for goal number 2. Caradon were elated and with 15 minutes left defended with all they had. 5 Minutes from the end Plym were able to pull 1 back through a well struck short corner and the match finished 2 - 1 to the 3rds. Another great team performance which pushed them another place up the table.

Bude I 0 v 2 Caradon Ladies I Cornwall County Cup Competition
On a chilly Sunday, 13 Caradon players made the journey to face Bude 1sts in the Cornwall Cup. It was a mixed selection of players, but all went with a sense of ‘anything is possible’. The game started well with Caradon producing very entertaining flowing hockey through the midfield, with Jacqui, Poady, Helen and Olivia linking well. This pressure was finally converted into a goal, when a well struck short corner from Poady hit the back board. Continued hassling from Nicole and Stacey up front resulted in more Bude errors and before long, the score was 2-0 after another short corner conversion from Poady. Caradon went into half time full of confidence, but knew that Bude would come back strongly. The second half started with some attacking play from Bude, but the Caradon defence of Nicky, Hannah, Sharon and Josie in goal, held firm. Caradon continued to attack, but couldn’t convert anymore chances and the result remained at 2-0. A huge thank you and well done to all those that played, it was a true Caradon effort. Bring on the next round!

Caradon Men 2 v 1 Duchy
This Saturday Caradon Men entertained high flying Duchy at the Lux Park Astro. With Duchy joint top of the league, Caradon were expecting a tough game and that's just what they got. Duchy started the stronger and crafted the first chances of the game with Toby Riddle pulling off some great saves to keep Caradon in the game. The home team then started to settle with Ieuan Jefferies coming close with a flick from the edge of the D. However it was Duchy who took the lead with a slick short corner routine which saw McKenzie with an easy tap in on the far post. On the half hour mark Caradon drew level with a successful short corner of their own. The initial strike from Leon Farrow was saved but Martin Batty was on hand to tuck the ball away smartly. Duchy soon had a chance to go in a goal up but Riddle again saved acrobatically to keep things square.
Caradon started the second half the more aggressive, pushing men forward at every opportunity but this left gaps in the middle of the park, Josh Terry tracking back admirably to cover an injured Paul Foster saved a massive overlap and Rapper Tamblyn ran his heart out in Midfield. With ten minutes left some super interplay between Farrow and Luke Jeffery secured a short for the home side. A sharp injection from Batty gave Farrow time to get his shot off cleanly, the shot was saved by the Duchy keeper but fell back to the feet of Farrow who did not fail with his second attempt, blasting the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. The last few minutes saw some desperate defending from Caradon but a late short for the visiting side made for an exciting final few minutes. Duchy getting the ball over the line in the last few second of the game only for the two umpires to come together and rule a second McKenzie goal out as the ball had already crossed the back line.
After loosing the away leg to Duchy 5-4 this was a fantastic and deserved result for Caradon. The fixtures don't get any easier for Caradon as this week they travel to table topping Bude, but can go there with confidence after this weeks superb team performance.
Caradon Ladies I 4 v 0 Exe
Despite the chilly start Caradon quickly warmed themselves up by scoring their first goal within the a few minutes of the first half. After an excellent ball across the ‘D’ from Poady, caradon’s upfront Anna Harding made the score 1:0 to Caradon after scoring from a deflection up and over Exe’s keeper.
After some excellent passes from the Caradon midfield, composed of Becky Strang, Poady, Marcia Burgess and Jacqui Walters, Poady was able to break away and drive the ball up the pitch to score caradon’s 2nd goal from a strike from the top of the ‘D’.
Fleur Worden, with a drive up from the half way line, dribbled the ball past Exe’s defence and around the keeper to deftly tap it into the goal making the score 3:0 at half time.
After a stirring half time talk Caradon went into the second half with confidence. Despite Exe’s strong comeback caradon’s defence and keeper Helen Delbridge stayed strong, not conceding any goals to the opposition.
Caradon’s fourth and final goal came from a long corner hit to the top of the ‘D’ where Jacqui Walters took the first strike only to have Exe’s keeper save it and kick it back out into the ‘D’. Reenie Batten then took full advantage of this to flick the ball past the keeper and into the goal.
Despite a valiant effort Exe couldn’t compete, allowing Caradon with the score at four nil, to go away with yet another win under their belts.
22-Jan-11
Caradon Ladies I 4 v 3 Plymouth Marjons HC II
Caradon Ladies 1st team knew they needed to come out strong against Plymouth Marjon to try and better the 2-1 away result from their previous meeting. They did not disappoint.
From the first whistle both teams battled hard and attacking passes linked well with penetrating runs. Within the first 10 minutes of the game Caradon were awarded a penalty corner. Clare Worden expertly injected the ball out to Clare Poad who calmly took a strike from the top of the circle. The ball deflected off a defender into the back of the net to secure Caradon's first goal and fire up the team to score some more. Marjon did not step off the gas though and made some great runs through the middle of the park. They were no match for the back defensive line of Claire Brown, Rachel Spencer and Sharon Jeffrey though who all put in hard tackles. Helen Delbridge made some fantastic saves being picked up and cleared by Becky Strang. The onslaught of strikes on goal in a short time was too much for Caradon and Marjon equalised to 1-1. There was a nail biting one on one with the keeper from Fleur Worden but alas it was not to be. Again Caradon's tactical play gained them another penalty and Poad deftly took the ball around the impending Marjon defence and pelted the ball into the goal to make the score 2-1. This seemed to be the order of the day for player of the match Poad who scored Caradon's next two goals in much the same way with cheers from the supporters on the sideline.
Caradon continued to play well and kept up their effective attacking play narrowly missing goals to add to the scoreline. Marjon kept up the fight and although a goal was saved off the line by Spencer and cracking tackles were put in by Hannah Quaintance penalty corners were awarded and converted well by Marjon. A well fought game by both teams saw the final score at 4-3 to Caradon adding to their winning streak of late.
Caradon Ladies III 1 v 0 Truro II
Caradon 3rd string hosted Truro 2nds on saturday, on their last meeting Caradon were defeated by the Truro side 4-0 so they knew this wasn't going to an easy fixture. Caradon however still reeling from their 3-1 victory over Launceston started strong and pressured the travelling side straight from the off, and it was only 10 minutes into the first half when Caradon were rewarded by a goal when the Truro keeper made a mistake on clearing the ball and Molly Walsh ( playing her 2 match in senior hockey) managed to slip the ball over the line.
Caradon kept battling and had the upper hand in the first half to come off at 1/2 time with this slender lead.
The young Truro side came back on the pitch with more vigor in the second half and turned the pressure back on. Caradon's defence stood strong and with some excellent saves from keeper Josie Dudley kept hold of their lead. Caradon's legs were beginning to tire in the last 1/4 and with sheer grit and determination managed to come away with maximum points. A great team effort!!!
Caradon Ladies III 0 v 2 Bodmin
Sunday and caradon III's were on the pitch again with their Cornwall cup match against division 1 side Bodmin. Bodmin not having won a match in their division had everything to prove and not playing a fixture on Saturday had fresh leg power. Caradon again battled hard and kept the relentless Bodmin pressure at bay until 10 minutes from half time, when Bodmin got lucky as the ball was defected off a caradon stick into the goal. caradon were gutted but lifted their heads and battled on. 1/2 time and a welcome break, and a respectable score which could be pulled back with hard work, Caradon's legs were however beginning to feel the burn and Bodmin started to capitalise on this by moving the ball quickly around the pitch. Lady luck was definately on Bodmin's side today when the ball trickled over the line after a goal line scramble. The match finished with this 0-2 result but again a great team performance from the Caradon 3rd string. Next week they take on top of the table St. Austell.
15-Jan-11
Caradon Ladies I 3 v 1 White Eagles
Caradon Ladies 1st team played their first league game after the Christmas break and continued their run of good results with a 3-1 victory over mid table rivals White Eagles.
With two regular players missing from the starting line up Caradon started nervously and this was not helped by a hamstring injury to captain Amy Greenbank which left her to play a solitary role in the oppositions circle and a further change in team formation. The home team adapted well and numerous chances were created and soon they took the lead when a through ball from Clare Poad found Greenbank free in the circle and she accurately powered her shot past the helpless keeper. This goal seemed to spur the Eagles into action and they soon equalised from a short corner.
The game became stretched and wingers Amy Collins and Anna Harding worked hard to give the game width as well as length. Jacqui Walters was finding more space and from a weaving run found herself at the top of the circle, her rasping shot found the backboard to make the half time score 2-1.
As the second half started composure was required from the whole team as pressure was beginning to mount from the Eagles. Rachel Spencer stood firm in the center of defence and any shots on goal were easily dealt with by keeper Helen Dellbridge. The next goal was crucial and it was Caradons Fleur Worden who effectively finished the match. An attacking drive and pass from man of the match Poad found the inform Worden to slot past the keeper.
As the final whistle blew Caradon were relieved to take all the points on offer. Players will need to recover quickly from numerous injuries before they take on a strong Plymouth Marjons team at Lux Park on Saturday, 3.00pm.
Launceston 1 v 3 Caradon Ladies III
Caradon III’s travelled to Bude for this weekends match against Launceston. Caradon haven’t won a match since the start of the season although they have been close on many occasions and have always had a very close match against this week’s opposition.
Captain Shelley Lockett won the toss and opted to start with the wind behind them on a very breezy pitch!! Both sides started eagerly but with strong tackles and accurate passing Caradon kept the upper hand and started to stamp their authority on the game. Defenders Jane Luiten, Jeanette Turpin and Michelle Boots easily dealt with any pressure and midway through the 1st half Lauren Horner won a short corner for the travelling side and a Lockett strike was easily converted by debutant Molly Walsh who was positioned beautifully on the far post.
Caradon knew they couldn’t sit on this slender lead and started the 2nd half with even more vigor, Lockett, Jules Walsh and Molly Walsh dominated the centre of the pitch and with confidence brimming skillfully pushed the ball forward. Abi Larigo, Karen Bussell, Bizzie Dinis and Lauren Horner kept the ball high with some lovely interplay and soon were awarded another short corner; another Lockett strike and this time Jules Walsh ran down the deflection and slotted home goal number 2. Maria Jordan moved back to the centre of the pitch to help out the midfield and held strong the left side of the pitch, and with Boots, Turpin and Luiten not putting a foot wrong Launceston were beginning to get frustrated. Horner was really unlucky not to get her name on the score sheet when her thundering strike on goal was unfortunately disallowed. Caradon kept up the pressure and Jules was unlucky not to get another goal when her strike, ricochet off the near post. It was thus again a short corner that gave Caradon the security they needed when Lockett finally got her name on the score sheet with a strike from the top of the D. With the game in the dying minutes Launceston managed to get a goal past keeper Josie Dudley who is proving an invaluable member of the team ( having only been a keeper for 6 months) providing the defence with the confidence they have needed in recent seasons. Next week it’s a home match against Truro 2 and Caradon are hoping to reproduce this weeks successes.
11-Dec-10
Caradon Men 2 v 3 Truro
Caradon started the second half of the season looking to reverse their previous result against Truro B. Truro brought a stronger team with them this time around and showed more attacking intent from the outset. However, Caradon are also an improving team and the game ebbed and flowed with each side leading at times. Caradon took the lead mid-way through the first half with a good turn-and-shot from captain Martin Batty that went in off the inside of the post. Truro levelled not long after after Caradon conceded a soft short corner that was well converted. The teams went into the break even. Truro started the second half stronger and went into the lead with a good through ball that was flicked over the goalkeeper. Caradon equalised soon after with a coverted short corner of their own, ably put away by Batty. Caradon continued to press and were looking the better team throughout the second half. They were undone however, by an unfortunate mistake at the back, which allowed Truro to tap home at the far post and leave Caradon feeling robbed for the second time this season against these opponents.

Caradon Ladies I 3 v 2 Newquay
After the weeks snow and ice this was certainly a fixture that provided warmth and delight to Caradon Hockey Club and their supporting band of merry men and women!
Newquay, who currently sit top of the table and have not lost a fixture all season probably felt that this would be an easy win. However this was a time for the home team to show some form, some dominance and to put on the display of the season.
The game started at a pace with end to end play. The controlled performance of the centre midfield line up of Claire Worden, Jacqui Walter and Clare Poad ensured that the away team were stifled and unable to break through with any great power. The continuing supporting play and running from Fleur Worden and Amy Collins meant that Caradon had the better chances.
The pressure being pressed on the Newquay defence eventually led to the award of a penalty corner, following a strong run on the right wing by Carina Batten. With the tactics being called by Poady, Fleur stepped up to take the stop and strike and the lofted shot hit the backboard with gusto.
Spirits were high during the half time team talk with captain Amy Greenbank highlighting that they were to continue to play in the same manner as the first half. As the team walked back out onto the pitch there was a calmness that typified how they had played.
As suspected Newquay came out stronger in the second half and they soon levelled the scores. Heads remained high though and they didn’t attempt to change the game plan. With strong runs on the left hand side of the pitch Hannah Quaintance had to keep the speedy winger at bay which she did to perfection. The rest of the defence played their part with telling tackles and perfect positional play from Marcia Burgess and Sharon Jeffrey.
With the Newquay attacks coming fast and furious it was only a matter of time before they eventually broke the back line with their centre forward striking the ball with ease and taking the lead 1-2.
Again Caradon kept their heads knowing that they could get back in the game and it wasn’t that long in coming as man of the match Fleur Worden once again pressed and hassled the defence into making mistakes. Her sheer persistence drove her into the circle where she pushed the ball into the back of the net. The game was poised for an exciting finish.
The winner was set up when a quickly taken free hit from Poady landed on the feet of the defence. The awarded penalty was then executed with accuracy as Poad side stepped the running defender and planted it on the back board. With 10 minutes left to play the home side played with confidence and passed the ball around.
This was by far their match of the season so far and they should enjoy the plaudits but take this into the next game against Bude.

Dart 1 v 2 Caradon Ladies I
Caradon travelled to Dart with 12 players and came away with all 3 points. Captain Amy Greenbank won the toss and Caradon attacked from the whistle, with driving runs on the right from Carina Batten and Claire Poad confusing the Dart defence to allow Fleur Worden to send the ball past the away keeper.
Caradon on a high and playing some fluent hockey, player of the match Claire Worden controlled play in the midfield allowing Anna Harding and Amy Collins to push forward injecting balls into the front runners. The second goal came from a strike at the top of the “D” from which Greenbank who was waiting at the far post slotted it in.
The second half Dart started the stronger and within in minutes had scored from a short corner, the game then became wide open with Caradon attacking trying to score, the Dart defence holding firm then Caradon defenders of Marcia Burgess, Hannah Quaintance and Sharon Jeffery having to make several timely tackles and goalie Helen Delbridge making some outstanding saves, and although Caradon striker Laura Tuxford had several attempts on goal the ball just did not want to go in. When the final whistle came Caradon were overjoyed to get the win and ready to take on Sidmouth at home next week at 3pm
Caradon Men 2 v 2 United Services
An encouraging win last week against Truro meant that Caradon went into Saturday's match with USHC with growing confidence. With the Captain back in the fold after deserting to watch the All Black's the previous week, Caradon could field a virtual full strength side. The game started well with both sides trying to take the initiative and it took some good USHC defending to stop Caradon from going ahead early. Having made all the pressure, Caradon broke the deadlock on 20mins after some good work down the right flank by Ieuan Jeffries and Luke Jeffrey. Leon Farrow supplied the smart finish with a strong back stick shot. Caradon continued to pressure and were unlucky not to get the second goal and were sucker-punched by USHC on the stroke of half-time when they converted from their first short corner. USHC came out the stronger in the second half and went ahead with a scrambled conversion of their next short corner. Caradon pressurised USHC and got their reward with a short corner of their own. Paul Luiten struck the first attempt at the onrushing defender's foot and then followed up with a strong finish into the top corner. Caradon continued to put pressure on USHC and their 'keeper made a good save from a Luiten deflection. It was destined to be a draw when Caradon failed to put the ball into an open net not long before the end. A good result in the end given the way the season has been so far, but disappointing that Caradon couldn't go and win the game.

Caradon Ladies II 2 v 2 Marjon III
Caradon started strong with great attacking play through the mid field, Manley's skill awarded Caradon in a short corner and were unlucky not to score, determined play from Charlotte Caradon kept on the pressure, unfortunately Mortimore was injured and Caradon were down to 10 ladies. Majons were quick to attack and scored their first goal. They continued to pressure the defence but good play by woodman and prentice kept them out. Strand and Giddy working well together gave Giddy the chance to level the score. Caradon worked hard but were unlucky to keep out Marjon's second goal, Marjon's tried to push forward again but great defensive play from Spencer and Delbridge and some sleek passing up the field found Manley who skillfully slipped it past the goalie. Caradon battled through the game and ended on a 2 all draw

Caradon Ladies I 5 v 0 Bude II CUP
On Saturday Caradon 1sts took on Bude 2nds in the cup, in a game that the whole side was looking forward too. The team started well with an early goal from Clare Worden, who picked the ball up from a long corner, drove unchallenged to the top of the D and struck, 1-0 to Caradon. This was quickly followed by the first of Laura Tuxford’s hat-trick, again a strike from the top of D that the keeper couldn’t reach. Caradon went for the half time team talk 3-0 up after a run from Carina Batten down the right and beautiful ball across the D was met by Amy Greenbank on the far post and slotted home. Amy’s deep and inspiring team talk at half time, galvanised the team once more and everyone returned to the pitch with smiles on their faces!
Throughout the second half there was more excellent passing up the pitch from Caradon and after some pressure in Caradon’s D, a clearance from Clare Worden was met on the half way line by Laura Tuxford, where she rounded 2 players and scored, maybe with a little help from Clare Poad!!!
The final goal was from sustained pressure and a goal mouth scramble, finished off by Laura Tuxford.
All round this was a great game for Caradon and gave everyone a lift prior to Saturday’s game away to top of the table Teign.
Caradon III 0 v 8 Falmouth I CUP
Caradon III got through to the 2nd round of the cornwall cup only to be drawn against Premier 2 side Falmouth 1st. They knew this would be no mean feat but stepped up to the challenge and decided they would do their best to make it hard work for the visiting side.
Caradon won the toss and started stongly but keeping the ball out of their half took great will and determination. Caradon's back 4, Julia Eldridge, Claire Brown ( who has just returned from giving birth 4 weeks ago), Jeanette Turpin and Michelle Boots battled hard and with Josie Dudley in goal they kept a clean sheet in the first 20 mins. Falmouth were becoming frustrated and upped their attacks bringing all but 1 player forward to push for their illusive goal. Delia Woodman, Olivia Childs and Amy Collins ran themselves ragged in midfield trying to give their defence a much needed break from the onslaught of attacks. Half time arrived with Falmouth having bagged 3 goals in the last 15 minutes of the half.
Caradon knew the visitors wouldn't be happy with just the 3 and would come back on the pitch with more aggression wanting to hit double figures if they could. Caradon carried on fighting hard but with the never ending on-slaught of attacks it was the leg power that had them beat and Falmouth managed to put another 5 past them. A team performance to be proud of against a team 3 divisions higher, Caradon 3rds never gave up!!! Well done in beating the prediction of some and stopping a double figure score!
St Austell 3 v 2 Caradon Men
Last weekend Caradon Men made the short trip to St Austell, expecting a tougher game than the previous week.
In a fairly even first half which saw some very open hockey with both sides squandering chances, it was St Austell who took the lead. Caradon gave the ball away cheaply on the halfway line, whilst on the attack, which left the Caradon defence short. Some neat passing between the St Austell forwards forged out a chance which was taken with aplomb.
The second half saw a similar start but it wasn't long before Terry struck back for Caradon with a sharp finish. Caradon then took the lead with Williams opening his account for the season with a beautiful finish into the top left corner. St Austell then struck back, a break down the right saw an innocuous cross come into the D only to be deflected onto the stick of a St Austell forward, who finished smartly. Some excellent defending from Towers saw him pick up a deserved man of the match but even he couldn't stop the final goal of the game. With five minutes left, a St Austell forward took the ball to the top of the D, a miss hit shot committed the keeper to the floor, the bouncing ball then came down, landing on the keeper and rolling into the net, leaving Caradon feeling pretty sorry for themselves. The visitors still had chances to square the game with time running out but could not put their short corners away, St Austell coming out 3-2 victors.
23-Oct-10 St Austell 1 v 1 Caradon II
A top table clash against league-leaders, St Austell, was in store for Caradon this week. The game did not disappoint with both sides attacking hard from the off. The home side had the early pressure, but Caradon’s defence of Spencer, Prentice, Lilley and Yeoman (yes the Legend!) remained rock solid. Caradon continued to frustrate the home side, but eventually the Saints’ pressure won them a short corner. An advantage, you would think? Not as far as Caradon were concerned, as Wood comfortably stopped the strike on the goal line. Not used to being defied, Saints upped the pressure winning two more corners, only to be thwarted by the visitor’s determined defence. Despite the heavy assaults, Caradon’s midfield worked hard, with Collins setting up Giddy to carve her way through the Saints defence on more than one occasion. But that first goal remained elusive for both teams and at halftime they went in 0-0.
Positional changes to the visitors for the second half saw a more flowing attack with Mortimore, Manley & Collins making their presence felt in the midfield battles. Unfortunately it was Saints that managed to take the lead with a shot that just snuck by Yeoman’s fingertips. This spurred Caradon into action and there was a distinct up in the tempo. Spencer launched a rocket pass from defence to Hyslop on the wing, a neat pass to Manley, who drove it on to the defender’s foot to win a corner. A sneaky slip pass out to Mortimore saw the ball swept on target, kindly assisted in by a defender.
Caradon go home with a valuable point in the bag, knowing that they are the only team to score past Saints so far this season. Caradon Ladies 0 v Manamead 1
On a chilly autumnal day, after watching Caradon 3's triumph over Falmouth earlier that afternoon,Caradon hosted their second home game of the season. Again with only the bare eleven.... ('bare' meaning few numbers guys, not clothing!!!....altho if it means that we get more sideline support then..!).... Caradon knew they had a tough game ahead but with Captain Amy Greenback winning the toss Caradon started with great promise! The first half saw both teams putting pressure on the other, but with defences standing strong it was to no avail. Infact the most dramatic thing during this first half was the weather, a downpour like no other that definitely christened the new shirts! Don't worry, I wont do a spot of advertising here....oh sod it, yeah i will ; "kindly sponsored by Hodge Electrical & Mechanical!" (Please DON'T put that in the paper EJ - Kev will kill me!!!)
Anyway, where was I, I wasn't going to do this.....I feel like Sara Cox going off on a tangent!!! BTW How much better is she than Moyles in the mornin?!! I recon bring her back!!! Oh chuffin 'eck....sorry.....right....
..... Half time couldn’t have come soon enough for both teams and Caradon used the break to come back out with renewed vigour, forming some well-worked passes together. However constant pressure from Manamead eventually paid off and they were rewarded with the first and only goal of the day through open play. Manamead worked their way through the field and made no mistake with the strike, beating Caradon's keeper through a crowd of players. Caradon battled on, but it wasn’t to be our day. It has to be said that Manamead played well and unfortunately on the day Caradon were not quite at their best, however onwards and upwards!....All are now looking forward to training on Wednesday and unleashing more of the traditional Caradon passion for their first Cup match on Saturday.
Oh and details of xmas do will be with you v.v.v soon, so watch this space!!!...well actually watch the noticey diary bit on the website!!!! Cheers and gone!! TTFN!! xCaradon III 3 V Falmouth III 0
Caradon 3rds knew that this weeks fixture was one of their best hopes for a win, but getting a team was more of a task. Luckily by 10am Saturday morning all was not lost as Skipper Shelley Lockett had even managed to secure a much sought after sub. Fielding 3 Juniors and bringing in semi retired Angela Delbridge to the field, the team looked good for this encounter.
Caradon knew they had to start strong and pushed forward straight from the starting whistle, the 3 juniors ( Olivia Childs, Bizzie Dinnis and Nichole Harding) soon made they're mark on the game and looked comfortable on the pitch intercepting and moving off the ball with ease. The defence of Delia Woodman, Jane Luiten and Delbridge confidently cleared any attempt to penatrate the home sides 'D'. Strong game play paid off mid way through the 1st half when Harding slammed home a Lockett cross to put the home side ahead. Caradon carried on their relentless attacks and were unlucky not to put another goal away in a goal line scramble.
A productive team talk and great support on the side lines meant Caradon carried on where they left off at half time. Lockett, Woodman and Lauren Horner worked hard winning the ball and feeding the forwards Abi Larigo, Karen Bussel and Maria Woodman, not giving the Falmouth's defence a moments peace. Goal number 2 came from a great solo run from Delbridge through the middle and blasted home with ease. The home side then relaxed and played their best passing game this season with some great free flowing hockey. Stand in Keeper Becky Eddy hardly touched the ball as the defence were on fire clearing any of Fal's attempts. The final goal came from a free hit just outside the D, picked up by Horner who fired home from a very tight angle to put the game out of reach of the visiting side, thankfully, as tired legs were beginning to set in. In the dying seconds Falmouth were awarded a penalty corner but after pinging off the post, Luiten cleared the ball and put and end to a great game! A great team performance and a much needed lift for this ever improving team. Well done Delia Woodman who was voted player of the match. Tavistock 2 - Caradon 1
Caradon Men travelled to Tavistock with intensions of a healthy win, but it was just not to be. After loosing their captain on route due to a sick horse, an already weakened Caradon arrived at a damp and cold Kelly College pitch with Spencer in charge. After a frantic first ten minutes, the travelling side could stamp no authority on the game and it was Tavistock that took the lead after a short corner routine went wrong. The Caradon defence charged out to meet the attackers and foiled the set piece, in the ensuing scramble the ball squeezed between two sticks, looped up over the keeper and into the net. Caradon responded immediately with a short corner of their own, a crisp shot from Farrow could not be stopped, despite the block from the keeper. Caradon then almost took the lead after a smart deflection from Spencer struck the upright. Caradon went down to ten men before the break with Terry seeing yellow for a foot to ball incident.
The second half saw much of the same ebb and flow, despite the half time team talk. Caradon seemed unable to stop the chaotic nature of the game and soon fell behind after Tavistock broke clear and finished well. Caradon continued to press for the win and were nearly caught out after their crossbar was rattled late in the game. Despite wave after wave of attacks, Caradon were unable to break the home side and went down 2-1 to a delighted Tavistock. This week the men travel to St.Austell where improvements must be made if they are to gain anything from the match. 16-Oct-10
TRURO II 1 V 3 CARADON II
Caradon 2's travelled to Truro on an unseasonally hot and sunny afternoon, hoping to follow up their win last week with another 3 points.
Another slight change in the line up meant that a much sought after sub was available on the side of the pitch for those returning from injury. Caradon started as they have done with every game so far, a strong determination to be the first to score and early – and they did not disappoint. Intercepting from the Truro midfield, some great passing exchanges got the ball into the D where Michelle Giddy added to her already impressive goal tally this season with a bat down into the back board.
Brimming with confidence, free-flowing hockey and switches from the left to the right put Caradon in the driving seat for their second, a great finish by midfielder Beccy Mortimer. Truro counter attacks however were not to be taken lightly, strong hits to their wide players were quick and sometimes caught Caradon off guard. Even so, some great stops by Josie Dudley in goal kept it 2-0 until half time.
Rolling substitutions proved invaluable, especially in the rising temperatures and glaring sunshine. Débutante Olivia Childs impressed with driving runs on the left, clear shouts and the energy needed at attacking points of the game. Similarly on the right, the passing between Charlotte Hislop and Pippa Hedley advancing up the pitch and into the D won Caradon a short corner after a foot. A push out from Giddy was met by Nicky Wood at the top of the D who aimed at Helen Manley positioned in front of the keeper, whose deflected shot went in the bottom corner.
Truro continued to pressure with their counter attacks and in the last 15 minutes, this paid off as Caradon were left outnumbered at the back leaving the home team in space to get a goal back. Despite tiredness setting in, Caradon did a sterling defence job and kept out any further attacks to finish the game 3-1.
Caradon 2's can take a lot from this game and the progress they've made so far in the season. Pairings in position on the pitch are working well and as with the team as a whole, improving in confidence with each game.
