JUNIOR HOCKEY 2011/2012

7 November 2011 - Caradon under 10's stars shine......

A selection of Caradons juniors made the trip to Penzance on Sunday to take part in the mixed under 10s mini league. A bright sunny day in Penzance was the backdrop for the only Caradon Hockey club victory of the weekend.

The chilly breeze seemed to add to the pre match nerves for the travelling youngsters but within 5 minutes of their 1st game starting they had found their feet. Some wonderful passing play from the Caradon side gave Jacob Andrews chance for a run on goal and a strong strike slotted the goal into the far corner. The Caradon defence weren’t troubled at all in this first game and so strong was the team effort Andrews found himself on another run into goal and again the ball was fired into the goal. The final whistle blew shortly after giving the team their first win.

The Penzance B looked a stronger team than the first but with Caradons confidence boosted after their 1st win things were looking good. This game would prove to be a showcase of their talent and team spirit in a game they dominated right from the start. Ben Reynolds, Abigail Johnson and Kerryn Walsh all scored in this game, showing that it truly was a team effort. Ben Fisher in goal was also tested for the first time and dealt with the pressure well, to end the game 3-0 to Caradon.

The third and final game of the day was against Truro A, by some way the strongest team of the day. The parents and coaches watching might have been nervous but the youngsters on the pitch certainly weren’t. Truro set out to win the game right from the start but their star striker was robbed of any goal scoring opportunity, as the entire Caradon team got behind the ball to defend. Sasha Riddle made some key tackles at the edge of their D, keeping Truro out and giving the team a little breathing space. Caradon gave away a series of penalties in their D, giving the opposition chance to take the lead, but try as they may they just couldn’t capitalise on the advantage. A big team push from Caradon gave Jacob Andrews enough space to goal for the third time that day and edge into the lead. Truro could never find their way back into the game after conceding the goal meaning Caradon won 1-0.

It was a very impressive display from the Caradon team, with the youngsters playing for the first time as a team and with a number of them playing their first competitive game. All of those who took part were a credit to the club, playing very fairly and with a great team spirit, thanks to all the parents who travelled down enabling them  to take part. The second leg of the competition takes place on the 4th of December.

Lux Park was the venue for the first of the county U14 boys and U12 girls tournaments.

Caradon U14 team had a completely new look from last years’ squad and competed well against teams from Truro, Launceston and Penzance. Callum Hodges and Jordan Johns shared the goalkeeping duties and both made some great saves.

The Caradon U12 girls squad had some familiar faces but welcomed the addition of Kerryn Walsh and Chloe Higman. The girls finished top of their group following 2 draws and a victory over Penzance. The goalscorers on the day were Jessica Jones, Daisy Hunn, Kerryn Walsh and Joely Bytheway.
